Hands-On with iOS 12’s New iPad Gestures

The new iPad gestures are identical to the gestures on the iPhone X, with Apple preparing us for the elimination of the Home button in future iPad models. Rumors suggest upcoming iPad Pro models will feature a TrueDepth camera system and Face ID rather than a traditional Touch ID Home button.

If you use an iPhone X, the new iPad gestures will be familiar to you, but if you don’t, it could take a bit of time to get used to. Here is a quick rundown of what to expect.

You can use the cursor feature on any iPad right now without iOS 12, jus tap & hold with two fingers close to each other and simply start using it :]

The “trackpad mode” has also been available for ages with two fingers

Ive got ios 12 on my X and my iPad pro 12.9 and I like the Siri workflows, I'm looking forward to potential community repositories of workflows you can import. And I'm excited to see what people create.

You’ve been able to have 3 apps open since before iOS 12

You forgot the switch between apps gesture

Another gesture: swipe/flick from bottom left to right (or vice versa) to quickly move between current running apps. Obviously you need to have more than one app running. It’s another option over swiping up to the middle and hold for multitasking – which you already mentioned.

3D Touch on iPhone space bar? Who the hell knew about that? Definitely not me.

You forgot swiping between apps with one finger by swiping up on the dock, which is new, in addition to the regular 4 finger gesture.

no pedro the future next gen ipod like the iphone X eventually be a bezel less device that anyone can comfortably hold in their hands. i,m definately looking forward to getting one.

They should not have removed CC from the multitasking screen and instead put iPad the multitasking + CC on iphone.

Keyboard trackpad gesture already existed in iOS 11, (and 10 I believe). Two fingers onto the keyboard to activate it.

God if the iPad Pro has a notch I’m skipping it. There’s no reason for a tablet to have a notch, I can kind of understand the iPhone having one but I would rather have a thicker bezel on the top and bottom if it means no fucking notch cutting into the display.

I might get in trouble for asking this, but what about a dark or night mode? Yes I know, I am twisted, so they tell me….

iPad cursormode was available on iOS 11. Just tap and hold with two fingers on the keyboard and swipe to desired location. Only new part is the option to do this with one finger on space bar.

So the only change is the control panel moving to the top right corner which is a dumb move… works good in landscape but in portrait mode it’s quite a reach… should have left it with app switcher

Wow! Multitasking has been greatly improved on iOS 12 for iPads with 2GB RAM! 3 apps active at once was once reserved for iPad pros with 4GB of RAM

You could already use three apps at once in iOS 11.
